3 Misconceptions about Inclusion

Inclusion, at present, is all about transformation. To truly be part of this movement, we must let go of some of our previous flawed perceptions about inclusion.    Equality   Inclusion is not a synonym of equality. Inclusion as a transformative process is about equitable experiences.   Presence  Presence of individuals from diverse backgrounds does not automatically make an organisation inclusive. In order for organisations to demonstrate inclusion, it is important to link presence to participation and achievement for all individuals. Easing Physical Barriers Easing physical barriers alone is not enough to make an environment inclusive. Inclusive spaces must also address cultural, linguistic, and social obstacles.

  Expressing what needs to be said in writing without unnecessary words can be challenging. However, concise sentences can make reading easier and retain the reader's attention for a longer period.  In academic writing to  effectively communicate complicated ideas, there is a tendency to use  compound or  compound-complex sentences . Particularly when  literature from more than one source has to be cited or multiple research insights have to be shared. Compound-complex sentences, if used  indiscriminately, can easily turn into lengthy run-on sentences. Lengthy run-on sentences often  fail to clearly articulate the author’s intentions.   Significance of title and subtitles Title, is the preliminary introduction to a manuscript. An accurate title with topic specific essential terms can make a manuscript relevant and easily discovered by search engines. Furthermore, appropriate titles aid abstracting and indexing in databases when the work is published. Similarly, suitable subtitles can summarize the content of a subsection. They also assist in breaking the monotony of long passages and provide easier access to pertinent information. Effective titles In academic writing, titles are expected to be concise.  In book chapters (non-fiction), they should identify the main theory or the variable being investigated.
